Postoperative Care
Get
enough rest:
Avoid
heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 2 weeks after surgery.
Get
enough rest after discharge. Be sure to walk slowly 8 to 10 times a day to
improve blood circulation.
Pain and fever control:
Use painkillers as directed by your doctor.
If you have a fever above 38 degrees, chills
or severe pain, or severe bleeding with clots, notify your doctor immediately.
Changing the dressing and caring for the
nephrostomy tube (if present):
The tube exit area should be kept dry and
clean.
The dressing should be changed daily or as
recommended by your doctor.
If you notice any discharge, bleeding, or an
unpleasant odor, be sure to notify your doctor.
Nutrition and fluid intake
Drinking plenty of fluids (at least 2 to 3
liters per day) is essential to flush the kidneys and prevent the formation of
new stones.
Avoid sugary and carbonated drinks. Water,
diluted lemon juice, and watermelon juice are good options.
Reduce salt intake, as high sodium increases
the risk of new stones.
A balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, and
light proteins (chicken, fish, egg whites) is recommended.
Avoid heavy and fatty foods for one week.
Precautions
Avoid swimming pools and bathtubs until your
doctor allows.
Medications should be taken exactly as
prescribed (antibiotics, painkillers, anti-inflammatories).
It is normal to see blood in your urine for a
few days, but if it increases in intensity and duration, especially if you pass
a lot of clots, inform your doctor.
Medical follow-up
*Usually, you should return after 7 to 10 days
for removal or examination of the nephrostomy tube.
*Ultrasound or CT scan is necessary as
recommended by your doctor to ensure complete removal of stones.
*Regular follow-up of urine and blood tests is
recommended to assess kidney function.
*If you have a DJ stent (Double J), return
after one month for its removal.
*Continue taking the medications you were
taking before surgery.
*Be sure to consult your doctor about taking
anticoagulant medications (Aspirin/Plavix/Warfarin, etc.).
